I decided to do something a little different with this months Album, and create a “theme” or “mood” for the evening, asking Tom and Michael to each share one word that encapsulated what they need from Album Club on Tuesday night. Tom responded JOY. Michael responded CONNECTION. So with those two words as the springboard, I sifted through my short-list of albums. Sylvan Esso’s self-titled first release, SE, exudes JOY to me. I can’t listen to it without wanting my body to move. Sylvan Esso is also a wonderful story of CONNECTION: two musicians from different projects getting together in 2014 to record music in a bedroom. Three albums later they are a married couple. The theme of CONNECTION further inspired the second album of the evening, DARKSIDES’s sophomore SPIRAL. Again, here we have two musicians with their own musical direction joining together to create a music greater than the sum of its parts. Friends for well over a decade, DARKSIDES brings a deeply immersive listening experience crystalized by the obvious CONNECTION between these two artists.
